Guaranteed returns and tip groups

An investment offer promises high, safe or quick returns, often through a chat group or an app.

How it works

  • You are added to a messaging group where 'analysts' share profitable trades, or you see an advert with a celebrity or a 'special scheme'.
  • A friendly guide pushes you towards an app or website that shows rapid gains. Early small withdrawals may work to build trust.
  • Later you are asked for larger deposits, fees or taxes to withdraw. The money and the profits are not real.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed or very high returns with little risk.
  • Pressure to invest quickly or recruit friends.
  • A person or platform that is not registered with the financial regulator.
  • An app that is not from your regulated broker or bank, installed from a link.
  • Fees or 'taxes' demanded before you can withdraw.

What to do

  • Check the regulator's register of authorised firms and advisers (see Resources) before sending money.
  • Use only your own broker or bank's official app from the official app store.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. Ask a trusted person and wait a day.

A made-up example of what you might hear

'Our team made 38% last month for members. Seats are limited. Download the app from this link and deposit today to join the next round.'

If you already paid or shared a code

  • Call your bank or card issuer straight away and ask them to block the card, account or payment. Use the number on the card or the official website.
  • Change passwords for any account that may be affected, starting with email and banking. Turn on two-step verification.
  • Report it to the authorities (see the list below). Keep screenshots, phone numbers, account details, transaction IDs and times.
